“Getting Over It” is a little miracle of a book. Even a highschooler could read and understand its practical wisdom. I wish I’d had it when I was early in my own divorce pains, but now that I’ve made it to the end of that road, I can see how enormously helpful this book is!

This book is a must read for anyone contemplating divorce. The length and breadth of this material is an impressive blending of the enormous complexity in any divorce, either adversarial or not.
The book is easy to read, clear and comprehensive. In our culture, marriages are burdened with the difficult task of solving relationship problems over the life span, which requires the ability to change. Today’s average life span of an American has increased (and continues to increase.) Marriage is often an exercise in futility, frustration and fighting (“a relationship would not be so burdened if we did not ask so much of it.” Author unknown)
The author chronicles the devastation of his own experience with a difficult divorce. It opened his eyes to see the need to focus on the children’s needs above all else. He directs the reader to look for the deeper issues that underlie and undermine the decision to separate and divorce.
Getting healthy (identifying where the real problems lie) is essential to recovery. The need to identify the need for acceptance of personal responsibility and accountability is thoroughly explored.
As a couple’s therapist for many years, I have watched as couples dance across the stage of life and crash when their blaming does not lead to relief or healing.
Chapters five and six contain a “laundry list” of techniques, suggestions, rules, ideas and how to use them constructively in being honest and working with the “long view” in mind. Personal responsibility, trust, accountability, factual and follow the rules. It includes grandparents, parents, in-laws, siblings, and extended family.
This book is for the individual who wants to expand their self-awareness and the role the can play to heal themselves first.

Getting Over It gives the much-needed point of view of the man who is left in divorce. The author bravely reviews his own part in the demolishment of his natural family by his wife’s leaving him. And, eventually, he is responsible for raising their two little girls, six and eight. A lesson for all of us who divorce with children. With heart, he brilliantly takes us through his sorrow. He places no blame and analyzes what happened. He then gives valuable lessons on the art of parenting with love, trust and discipline.
A must read for parents of divorce. The heart and wisdom of the good father post divorce. If all of my clients of divorce could have and would now read this book, their lives and the lives of their divorced partners and children would be oh so much better.
